Cardiff School of Medicine: University of Wales

Cardiff University School of Medicine first contacted me to produce a set of documentary images of the ‘student experience’, whilst taking the opportunity to promote the slowly waning university experience of human anatomical dissection . Initially plans were to photograph the ‘going-in’ and ‘coming-out’ of the dissection-theatre, this being the most ‘pinnacle’ of their educational medical journey. With both curiosity and confidence I suggested photographing the whole experience…

“The images that emerged from the Dissection-documentary project are honest and humane, and capture eloquently the dignity and courage of those involved: the students, their teachers, and the people who donated their own bodies to medical education. This project initially met with diffidence and reluctance, but its execution and outcome successfully won over skepticism, to the extent that those who at first required most persuasion emerged as its most enthusiastic champions and supporters.” D.
